"Five and a half years ago at the playground Keegan spotted a bunch of kids from a taekwondo summer camp. Curious as ever, he went over and talked to them and thus began our journey with taekwondo. Our family has been changed in countless positive ways by taekwondo. Most of the friends we've made after we moved were made through our involvement with taekwondo and now they're like family. My kids have learned lessons in perseverance, self-control, respect, kindness, hard work and resilience."

One Standard I Learned from Taekwondo Training and Future Self>
I make an effort to read every day.
One of the books I am currently reading is Future Self. There is one line from the book that has stayed with me:
โFailure for your future self is better than success that only satisfies your present self.โ
When I first read this sentence, I immediately thought about Taekwondo training and the students I see every day in our dojang.
Is Winning Right Now Always a Good Thing?
During sparring in the dojang, there are times when I see students who are focused only on not losing. They stay safely on the outside, avoid challenging techniques, and sometimes carry the mindset of, โAt least I didnโt lose.โย
On the surface, the result looks fine. They didnโt lose. But in that process, they didnโt take risks, they didnโt push beyond their limits, and they didnโt truly attempt to grow. This may be exactly what Future Self describes as โsuccess that satisfies only the present self.โ The Student Who Dares to Try Loses and Grows On the other hand, there are students who do the opposite.
They step in during sparring, they get hit, they fall while trying, and sometimes, they lose. But those students learn something deeper. They learn distance.
They learn timing. They learn how to move even when fear is present. That failure may look like a loss in the moment, but it is actually failure that builds their future self.
This, to me, is the healthiest kind of failure that Future Self talks about. Competition Is a Test for the โFuture Youโ Before competitions, I always tell students: โWinning is great, but the real purpose of this competition is to build your future self.โ Some students lose at tournaments. They feel frustrated.ย
Some even cry because things didnโt go as planned. But when they return to the dojang afterward, they are clearly different. Their attitude toward training changes. Their questions become deeper. Their focus becomes sharper.
Why? Because they have already experienced failure for their future self. Failure Is Not Waste. It Is an Investment While reading Future Self, I began to redefine failure for myself.ย
Failure is not:
wasted time
misused energy
proof of inadequacy
Failure is an investment sent to your future self. Every sparring loss, every competition defeat,
every fall on the mat becomes an asset that strengthens who you will become. That Is Why We Allow Failure In our dojang, it is okay to fall, it is okay to lose, and it is more important to try again than to avoid failure. Because failure for the future is far more valuable than safe success in the present.
I Read Every Day Because I Want to Write Better I read every day to reflect on these ideas and to share better messages with our students and their parents.
Future Self feels very similar to Taekwondo training. The question is always the same:
Will you stay comfortable with todayโs small victories,
or will you challenge yourself once more for the sake of who you will become? Taekwondo is a place where we practice making that choice every day. Todayโs Failure Raises Tomorrowโs Standard Todayโs loss creates tomorrowโs focus. Todayโs failure raises the standard of your future self.
That is why we do not fear failure. Failure for your future self is already the beginning of success.
