"Five and a half years ago at the playground Keegan spotted a bunch of kids from a taekwondo summer camp. Curious as ever, he went over and talked to them and thus began our journey with taekwondo. Our family has been changed in countless positive ways by taekwondo. Most of the friends we've made after we moved were made through our involvement with taekwondo and now they're like family. My kids have learned lessons in perseverance, self-control, respect, kindness, hard work and resilience."

Every year in July and August, our dojang hosts a special reading event. We encourage our students to log the time they spend reading books, and we reward the top three readers with special prizes. All participants also receive a small gift to recognize their efforts. It’s a tradition we hope to continue for many years.
Are you reading diligently this summer? Have you thought about why reading is so important?
We don’t see this as just another dojang event. As an instructor, I feel a personal responsibility to lead by example. I continue this event each year because I believe it is not only a fun challenge, but an investment in our students’ future. Through reading, children enrich their lives in ways that go far beyond school. It shapes their thinking, inspires curiosity, and opens doors to endless possibilities.
Honestly, there are so many incredible books out there that offer life-changing insights—sometimes for just $20 or $30. It makes you wonder how such valuable knowledge can be so accessible.
In my opinion, if children develop the habit of reading at a young age, school becomes much easier to navigate. Later on, no matter what career path they pursue, the benefits of reading—such as better comprehension, creativity, and communication—will continue to support them every step of the way.
I personally make time to read every day, both in the morning and again for 20 to 30 minutes in the evening. Once it became a habit, it felt strange not to read, even for a single day. When I travel, I always bring a small book and try to read whenever I have spare time.
Here’s a helpful tip: Instead of forcing yourself to finish one book before starting another, try reading four or five books at the same time, one chapter at a time. It keeps things fresh and engaging, and you may find yourself reading more than ever before.
To be honest, I wasn’t an avid reader when I was younger either. I truly believe there’s a right time in life when people naturally start enjoying books. Until that time comes, it’s important for parents to model good reading habits themselves. If your children see you picking up a book instead of a phone, that example can make a big difference.
Why does reading matter?
Boosts brain power: improves memory, focus, and critical thinking
Enhances language and writing skills: builds vocabulary and communication
Builds empathy and perspective: exposes us to different lives and cultures
Reduces stress: just six minutes of reading can reduce stress by more than 60%
Improves discipline and focus: especially helpful in today’s distracted world
How to build a lasting reading habit:
1. Set a time: read at the same time every day, like after breakfast or before bed
2. Carry a book: always keep one with you—paper or digital
3. Choose books you love: interest builds consistency
4. Read with family: make it a shared experience
5. Celebrate progress: just like with stripes and belts, every step matters
We hope this summer is filled with the knowledge, imagination, and inspiration that books can bring. Let’s grow our minds while staying cool and focused.
Happy reading, everyone!
