There’s a powerful quote from "Evenings Reading Adlerian Psychology" by Ichiro Kishimi:

“You were always taught by parents or teachers that you must achieve something in life. You grew up hearing that you must succeed, just like your uncle or grandfather. And what did you realize from that? That true education is not about forcing someone to accomplish something. True education is about helping you, from childhood, to live as yourself without imitating anyone else. That is real education.”

This deeply resonates with me and the educational values we strive to uphold at our Taekwondo dojang.

Each student walks into our dojang with a unique personality, temperament, and potential. Our role is not to mold them into copies of someone else’s definition of success, but to help them discover their own voice, their own strengths, and their own rhythm.

However, that doesn’t mean we reject competition or achievement. On the contrary, we absolutely believe in the value of setting goals, training hard, and experiencing the pride that comes from reaching personal milestones sometimes through healthy competition.

Competition, when approached correctly, builds resilience, discipline, and confidence. But what we do not believe in is a culture that idolizes being first place at the cost of everyone else, a culture that praises winners while ignoring those who fall short.

In our dojang, we celebrate growth, not just victory. We teach our students that success is not only measured by trophies or medals, but by the effort they give, the respect they show, and the perseverance they demonstrate.

We help them find value in both winning and losing because each experience offers a lesson. And above all, we remind them that they are enough just as they are, and that the greatest achievement is to become a better version of themselves, not someone else.

This, to us, is what true education looks like:
A balance of challenge and compassion.
Of excellence and individuality.
Of striving and belonging.
