At our Taekwondo dojang, we believe that every child has tremendous potential, and one of the most powerful tools to unlock that potential is praise with purpose. We don’t compliment children just to make them feel good in the moment — we praise them to help shape their mindset, their confidence, and the way their brain responds to challenges. We call this approach “Praise Brain Training.”

Whenever a student shows even a small improvement — a stronger kick, better focus, or a respectful attitude — we acknowledge it right away. This is not simply encouragement; this is teaching. Positive words and recognition activate a mindset in the child’s brain that says, “I can do it. I am capable. I can keep improving." Over time, this becomes a mental habit — a positive circuit in the brain.

Through this praise-based teaching method, our goal is for children to build real confidence. We want them to experience success inside the dojang and carry that same confidence outside — at school, at home, and in life. When a child believes in their abilities, they begin to move forward with courage instead of fear.

But praise alone is not enough.

To help our students grow into strong and disciplined individuals, we also teach responsibility and respect for rules. When a child makes a mistake or behaves inappropriately, we do not ignore it. We give them a clear warning and explain what may happen if the behavior continues. If the same behavior occurs again after the final warning, we follow through with the consequence. This helps our students understand accountability, boundaries, and the importance of discipline — core values of Taekwondo.

This balance of positive reinforcement and clear discipline is what shapes strong character. We want our students to know that they are supported, believed in, and capable — but also responsible for their actions. That is the true meaning of martial arts training.

Every Thursday, through these blog posts, we want to share not only what we teach but why we teach it this way. Our mission is to help children develop a strong mind, a confident heart, and a disciplined spirit — so that wherever they go and whatever challenges they face, they can say with certainty,

“I can do it.”
